|Description (Service)||The official proof of status as a permanent resident in Canada. Permanent residents will automatically receive their new card by mail when they arrive in Canada, as part of the immigration process, as long as they provided their address to CIC.
This wallet-sized plastic card is required for all permanent residents of Canada who want to return to Canada on a commercial carrier (airplane, boat, train or bus). If returning to Canada in a private vehicle, such as a car, other documents can be used.

|Eligibility||Individuals who have entered Canada through the immigration process and have been granted permanent resident status.
Individuals can apply for a permanent resident card if they:
* have permanent resident status,
* are in Canada,
* have not been asked by the Government of Canada to leave the country, and
* are not a Canadian citizen.
Individuals can also apply for a PR card if they have legally changed their name, or if their card:
*has expired or will soon expire,
*has been lost or stolen, or
*has been destroyed.
Individuals who become a Canadian citizen, do not need a permanent resident card.
