Description (Service) The volunteer tax program is a collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organizations. The organizations host tax preparation clinics and arrange for volunteers to prepare income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Eligibility Eligibility is based on family size. Total family income should be less than the information below: 
1 person - $30,000 
2 persons - $40,000 
3 persons - $42,500 
4 persons - $45,000 
5 persons - $47, 500 
More than 5 persons - $47,500 plus $2500 for each additional person 
 
Simple tax situation 
In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from these sources: 
employment 
pension 
benefits such as Canada Pension Plan, disability, employment insurance, social assistance 
registered retirement savings plans (RRSP's) 
support payments 
scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants 
interest (under $1,000) 
 
Volunteers do not prepare complex returns, such as returns for individuals who
* have self-employment income; 
* have business or rental income and expenses; 
* have capital gains or losses; 
* have employment expenses; 
* file for bankruptcy; or 
* deceased

Before booking an appointment, have the following information ready: 
 
1. Identification Valid, government issued photo identification must be provided before the volunteer can prepare the return.  
 
2. Prior tax information A copy of your 2016 income tax return or volunteer summary (if possible), and your 2016 Notice of  
Assessment (if possible), your social insurance number (SIN) and your spouse’s SIN 
 
3. A list of your dependents and their exact dates of birth, and their SINs, if they have one.

* T4A, T5, T3 - Pension, annuity and investment income, Canada/Ontario savings bonds  
* T4(OAS) - Old age security/ Guaranteed income supplement or spouse’s allowance

* T4RSP, T4RRIF - Registered retirement savings plan/Registered Retirement Income Fund  
* T4E - Employment insurance benefits  
* T5007 - Social assistance payments/ Worker’s compensation benefits  
* RC62 - Universal Child Care Benefit  
* IF YOU RECEIVED A LUMP-SUM PAYMENT, bring the breakdown statement from the payer  
 
5. Receipts for expenses and credits  
* Child care expenses and a completed T778, if you have one  
* Child support payments  
* Union dues  
* Tuition fees and education amount (T2202A)  
* Medical expenses  
* Charitable/political donations  
* All property taxes or rent paid  
* Public transit passes  
 
6. Other  
* Details of spouse’s and dependent's income  
* Date of arrival to Canada and status (if a new immigrant)  
* Proof of payment to non-resident dependants  
* Direct deposit information (void cheque/letter from the bank/credit union with your bank information)  
* Any other documentation that may pertain to your income taxes
