|Description (Service)||Enhancing and maintaining independence via core services such as:
Peer Support - Adjustment to sight loss, One-on-one peer support and mentorship, Drop-in Groups, Phone and Online Support
Home-Based Support: Vision Mate Program - Vision Mate volunteers provide one-on-one sighted assistance and companionship for a person who has sight loss. Usually volunteers visit for 2 hours a week, assisting in activities, such as; reading, organizing, walking, assisting with errands or outings, social visiting.
Beyond the Classroom - Functions centered around improving school experience for students with sight loss, such as; student panels, peer support groups, parental information nights, teacher and educator support, and high school-to-post secondary transition guidance.
Culture, Recreation and Sport Programs - Activities range from yoga and running groups to knitting and woodworking programs.
Youth Empowerment - For youth with vision loss to get together regularly with peers in a safe and inclusive environment.
Advocacy - Training in advocacy skills for people who want to either self advocate (advocate for their own personal needs, e.g., get the accommodations you need at school or work), raise awareness, or join in a collective effort.
CNIB Ambassador Program - A public speaking program for people who would like to raise awareness of sight loss and the work of CNIB at community events. CNIB Ambassadors represent CNIB where needed.
All appointments with CNIB Specialists are scheduled and conducted in the community or in the Low Vision Centre located on site. Five remote sites throughout Niagara are conducted to enable clients in the Niagara Region to access staff and CNIB support. Contact CNIB Niagara for dates and times.
